Star Trek DVD Announced
Paramount has set the date. On November 17, 2009 the new Star Trek DVD will be released. The Blu-Ray is scheduled to be released on the same day. It is believed that Paramount is also looking to promote the film to oscar voters and that is one of the reasons the DVD is scheduled to hit the stores when it is. I find this somewhat interesting as I am uncertain what awards in particular Star Trek can really be effectively positioned for. While I thought that the acting in the film was good. Both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto were excellent as Kirk and Spock respectively. Though I did not see their performances as Oscar-worthy. So, in that sense, the rumors that Paramount is looking to grab a nomination or two for Star Trek does seem a little puzzling to me.
But, as for the Star Trek DVD itself, I believe we are in store for a lot of great extras. Of course the DVD will come with a making-of featurette, but that is so standard as to hardly get me excited. What I am looking forward to is J.J. Abrams’ directors commentary. I’ve always found J.J. to be an extremely interesting and articulate fellow and I think that it is likely that he will share a great deal of behind-the-scenes insights.
Also, I hold out hope that there will be some mention about the plotline for Star Trek XII which at the moment is guarded closely under wraps. Though that may be asking for a little too much. Regardless, the DVD is almost here and I think that it is a great time to be a Trekkie.
Long live Star Trek!
