New Star Trek Movie Opens Tonight

Well folks, the new Star Trek movie opens tonight in many cities around the United States and it will open fully tomorrow May 8th. I’ve been thinking a little about this new Star Trek movie and I have to say I am beginning to get a little worried. The film is believed to have cost around $150 million and these days we all know that a huge weekend is required to make your money back on that kind of film. Can Star Trek do that?

Well, Wolverine opened to $85 million last weekend on a comparable number of screens. These days that’s the kind of open that a big movie is expected to make. But is Star Trek too niche for that kind of mainstream success? I really don’t know. I mean I hope the new Star Trek movie will appeal to people who were never fans of the previous Trek incarnations, but will it? I simply am beginning to have my doubts. If the movie tops out at a level which is where hit Star Trek movies have topped out in the past it will gross around $80 to $120 million which, in this day and age, is not really a big hit. We simply may not see any more Star Trek movies in the future if this film is not able to break at least $150 million in the United States. If it tops out at $120 million I believe that we can say goodbye to any future Star Trek films with the new cast. So I am concerned. As a Star Trek fan, I’d love to see several more movies with this cast and I’d like to enjoy quite a few more of them. But, as I said, I am beginning to doubt if that will be possible. But, fingers crossed, we will see more Star Trek movies and this blog will live on.
