I don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, JJ Abrams and crew did a great job of establishing the new cast in the last movie, and Zachary Quinto has established that he can do a pretty nasty Spock. Still, I feel a little whispy about seeing old friend Leonard Nimoy in a big screen Trek adventure.

If they do go forward with the new cast solely, I believe that that rules out any possibility that William Shatner will be appearing in any of the movies. I do accept this reality, but feel somewhat sad that we won’t be seeing any more of the original Kirk.

But, as for the Star Trek DVD itself, I believe we are in store for a lot of great extras. Of course the DVD will come with a making-of featurette, but that is so standard as to hardly get me excited. What I am looking forward to is J.J. Abrams’ directors commentary. I’ve always found J.J. to be an extremely interesting and articulate fellow and I think that it is likely that he will share a great deal of behind-the-scenes insights.

Also, I hold out hope that there will be some mention about the plotline for Star Trek XII which at the moment is guarded closely under wraps. Though that may be asking for a little too much. Regardless, the DVD is almost here and I think that it is a great time to be a Trekkie.

Long live Star Trek!

According to box office mojo the movie has made more than $250 million in the US and has grossed more than $380 in the world. Obviously this is very good news. Word of Star Trek XII has begun to spread among the fan sites like this one and I am anxiously awaiting a leak of the story. Though, of course, I have heard some things about the plot of the new Star Trek movie, tentatively scheduled to be released in 2011. And let’s just say that I am not going to let the cat out of the bag but I like what I am hearing!

Well, Wolverine opened to $85 million last weekend on a comparable number of screens. These days that’s the kind of open that a big movie is expected to make. But is Star Trek too niche for that kind of mainstream success? I really don’t know. I mean I hope the new Star Trek movie will appeal to people who were never fans of the previous Trek incarnations, but will it? I simply am beginning to have my doubts. If the movie tops out at a level which is where hit Star Trek movies have topped out in the past it will gross around $80 to $120 million which, in this day and age, is not really a big hit. We simply may not see any more Star Trek movies in the future if this film is not able to break at least $150 million in the United States. If it tops out at $120 million I believe that we can say goodbye to any future Star Trek films with the new cast. So I am concerned. As a Star Trek fan, I’d love to see several more movies with this cast and I’d like to enjoy quite a few more of them. But, as I said, I am beginning to doubt if that will be possible. But, fingers crossed, we will see more Star Trek movies and this blog will live on.

Also, early box office reports look good as advanced tickets are very strong and are out pacing Iron Man’s early ticket sales from 2008. Again, this is a very encouraging sign. As I have talked about before I believe that this film needs to be a very strong hit for Paramount to continue financing new Star Trek movies which of course is something that everyone wants to see.

So, with one and a half weeks before Star Trek’s release I think I might start a countdown on this site. No doubt that would add a little excitement to the proceedings. Live long and prosper!

I am starting to get very excited, as if you couldn’t tell, about this movie which is now only a two weeks away. I have been hearing different things about the box office predictions so I don’t know exactly how much it will make, but I am beginning to think it will be a big hit. And this is pretty much uncharted territory because no Star Trek movie has ever grossed as much as $150 million in the United States before. I am beginning to think that this one could be that big or possibly even bigger. We shall see. But fingers crossed. Anyway here are the images.

According to Roddenberry.com the new star trek flick will actually open at 7:00 on Thursday May 7th. So this is welcome news to all the Star Trek fans out there who are eager to see the film as soon as possible. I can count myself among the ranks of those who are dying to see this movie and I think that it will be a truly great flick.

I have been thinking a lot of late about how to rank this movie among the list of star trek movies if it is any good–which I think it will be. I don’t think that it can exceed the greatness that was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, but I believe that it could end becoming the second best of all the films. That is pretty high praise and just goes to show you how excited I am about this opening.

I still have a few doubts, but am getting increasingly excited for the new Star Trek movie. In my wildest dreams, three years ago, I never could have imagined the amount of passionate energy that has gone into re-imagining Star Trek. And so soon after the franchise fell pretty flat on its face after the debacles that were Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek: Insurrection.

Well, I am officially uber-psyched!

It remains interesting to think about what the new Star Trek movie might have been like had Paramount and Abrams scored Matt Damon. I think it could have been exciting however I believe that Abrams lucked out when Damon turned him down. Star Trek is such an iconic franchise and Kirk is truly a golden character.

I think it might be best to let Chris Pine make Kirk his own and have audiences embrace him in that role. With Matt Damon, who brings some audience expectations with him, the character would have been more pigeon-holed into a Matt Damon-type. With Pine, the character has a chance to truly establish himself.

I think as Trek fans, we lucked out when Damon passed.

However, with the new Star Trek movie expected to be a fantastic hit, one can expect to see Star Trek collectibles back on the rise. Surely, this good news to Paramount studios, who own the licensing rights to the franchise.
